Martin’s GPE Inception Maple was already one of the most interesting modern acoustic guitars in the company’s lineup. For 2025, Martin has taken the concept even further with a high-gloss finish, flamed maple construction, ebony appointments, and a striking new look that makes this guitar feel more like a custom-shop instrument.
I spent time with the 2025 Martin GPE Inception Maple to see what’s changed from the previous generation, how it sounds both acoustically and plugged in, and whether the upgrades justify the higher price. After playing it, my verdict is pretty straightforward: this is an exceptional acoustic guitar that earns a 9.7/10.
What’s New on the 2025 Martin GPE Inception Maple?
The Inception Maple was introduced as a different kind of Martin acoustic, combining sustainable tonewoods with modern construction and bracing technology. The 2025 model keeps that foundation while adding several premium visual and construction upgrades.

Flamed Maple Takes Center Stage
The most obvious change for 2025 is the use of flamed maple on the sides and back. The figuring is incredibly prominent, especially under bright lighting, and it gives the guitar a visual character that wasn’t present on the 2024 model.
The back combines flamed maple wings with a walnut strip running down the center. Combined with the black walnut and maple binding, the result looks considerably more exotic than what you might expect from a production Martin.
It’s one of those guitars that looks even better when you see it in person. Outdoors, especially on a stage or at a festival, the figuring really has an opportunity to stand out.
The 2025 High-Gloss Finish
Another major upgrade is the high-gloss finish. The 2024 Inception Maple used a matte finish, while the 2025 model gets a glossy Amber Fade Sunburst that dramatically changes the appearance of the guitar.
Martin did an excellent job with the finish. Under studio lighting, the surface is incredibly reflective and gives the guitar a much more premium appearance.
There is one tradeoff, however. High-gloss finishes show fingerprints and scratches more easily, and players who prefer the understated look of a matte finish may actually prefer the 2024 model.
Ebony Appointments
Martin has also moved to ebony for several important components on the 2025 model. The bridge and fingerboard are both FSC-certified ebony, and the headstock now features an ebony overlay with walnut behind it.
The ebony fingerboard also provides significantly more contrast with the Corian inlays. The inlays stand out more clearly than they did on the 2024 version, giving the neck a cleaner and more modern appearance.
Personally, I preferred the unique black walnut headstock and bridge on the 2024 model. The walnut gave that guitar a more distinctive identity, while the ebony appointments on the 2025 version feel more traditional and refined.
Skeletonized X Bracing
One of the most interesting aspects of the Inception Maple is the skeletonized X bracing that Martin introduced with the original model. Rather than using conventional solid braces, Martin uses laser etching technology to create a honeycomb-like pattern in the bracing.
The goal is to reduce weight while allowing the top to resonate more freely. The result is an acoustic that feels surprisingly modern in its response, with strong sustain and a punchy, articulate character.
It’s particularly effective when the guitar is plugged in. The Inception Maple has a fast response that allows notes to remain clear and defined rather than getting lost when you’re playing with other instruments.
LR Baggs Anthem Electronics
The 2025 GPE Inception Maple comes equipped with LR Baggs Anthem electronics. The pickup system is discreetly installed inside the guitar, keeping the exterior clean while giving you a stage-ready acoustic.
For my sound testing, I recorded the guitar acoustically with both a room microphone and a studio microphone, then plugged directly into Pro Tools using the onboard electronics. There was no post-processing on the direct signal, giving a good representation of how the LR Baggs Anthem system performs on its own.
How Does the Martin GPE Inception Maple Sound?
The first thing that stood out to me about the 2025 Inception Maple was how easy it is to play. The guitar has a modern feel that makes it extremely comfortable, while the combination of the European spruce top and maple construction gives it plenty of articulation.
It has a punchy response that allows individual notes to cut through a mix, but there’s still plenty of body and resonance when you’re playing chords. The result is an acoustic that works particularly well for players who need clarity without sacrificing fullness.
Plugged in, the guitar becomes even more impressive. The LR Baggs Anthem maintains the articulate character of the instrument and gives it the kind of direct, immediate response that works well for live performance and recording.

The 2025 version isn’t a complete redesign, but the visual differences between the two generations are significant. The biggest changes are the finish, flamed maple, ebony appointments, and the availability of a non-cutaway version.

There are things I prefer about each generation. I actually like the black walnut bridge and headstock of the 2024 model because they make it feel more unusual. But purely from a visual standpoint, the 2025 guitar is considerably more striking.
Non-Cutaway vs. Single-Cut
For 2025, Martin gives players another important option: you can choose between the single-cut version and the non-cutaway model. The two guitars are otherwise very similar, with the main difference being access to the higher frets.
The single cut makes sense if you frequently play above the 12th fret and want easier upper-register access. The non-cutaway version, however, has a more traditional appearance and lets the Grand Performance body shape remain completely intact.

The 2025 GPE Inception Maple comes with a premium hard-shell case. My guitar also arrived ready to play, including a charged battery for the onboard electronics, which meant it was essentially ready to plug in and take to the stage.
Price
The 2025 Martin GPE Inception Maple is priced at $4,199 for the non-cutaway version and $3,999 for the single-cut version. That’s a significant investment, especially when compared with the previous generation.
The 2024 models typically sell for around $3,000 to $3,300 now that the new version is available. That makes the previous generation particularly interesting for players who prefer the matte finish and black walnut appointments and don’t necessarily need the newest features.
You’re paying more for the 2025 model, but you’re also getting premium flamed maple, the high-gloss finish, ebony appointments, and the option of a non-cutaway body.

Who Is the Martin GPE Inception Maple For?
The Martin GPE Inception Maple is aimed at players who want something beyond the traditional Martin acoustic. It’s particularly well suited to professional musicians, recording artists, singer-songwriters, and players who want a modern-feeling acoustic that can work equally well on stage and in the studio.
The combination of excellent playability, strong acoustic projection, modern bracing, and LR Baggs electronics makes it an extremely versatile instrument. It’s also a guitar that makes a statement visually, especially with the flamed maple used on the 2025 model.
Martin GPE Inception Maple 2025 Review: Final Verdict
The 2024 Martin GPE Inception Maple was already one of the most impressive modern Martins I’d played, so I wasn’t sure how much better the 2025 version could actually be. Somehow, Martin managed to make it feel like a completely new instrument.
The flamed maple, high-gloss finish, ebony appointments, and non-cutaway option give the 2025 model a more premium identity, while the skeletonized X bracing and LR Baggs Anthem electronics preserve what made the original Inception Maple so interesting.
There are a couple of reasons I wouldn’t automatically recommend upgrading from the 2024 model. I actually prefer some of the walnut appointments on the older guitar, and players who love matte finishes will have to stick with the previous generation.
But if you’re looking for a premium modern Martin that combines exceptional playability, striking looks, excellent acoustic tone, and a great plugged-in sound, the 2025 GPE Inception Maple is an absolute standout.
My rating: 9.7/10
It’s expensive, but this is one of those guitars where the craftsmanship, materials, playability, and overall experience make the price easier to understand. The 2025 Martin GPE Inception Maple is a seriously impressive acoustic and one of my favorite modern Martins I’ve played.
