Martin has teamed up with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy for two signature acoustic guitars that take very different approaches to the same songwriting-focused concept. The Martin 00-DB Jeff Tweedy is the premium model, while the 000 Junior E Jeff Tweedy offers a smaller, more affordable alternative with built-in electronics.
I spent time with both guitars to compare their build quality, playability, tone, features, and price. While both models have the unmistakable character of a Martin acoustic, they offer very different experiences depending on what you’re looking for.
Martin 00-DB Jeff Tweedy
The 00-DB Jeff Tweedy is the premium model of the two and is essentially a revival of a previous Jeff Tweedy signature guitar. It uses a deeper double-O body design, giving it more resonance and low-end response than you might expect from a smaller-bodied acoustic.
The guitar features a solid FSC-certified mahogany top, back, and sides along with a 25.4-inch scale length. The combination gives the 00-DB a warm, woody character while retaining plenty of clarity and projection.
Build and Construction
The 00-DB has a high-quality gloss finish with an oak-toned top and a distinctive Tweedy Burst. White binding helps define the body shape, while the overall aesthetic keeps the guitar relatively understated and vintage-inspired.
The guitar uses scalloped X bracing made from FSC-certified spruce, along with an FSC-certified ebony bridge and fingerboard. Construction includes a traditional dovetail neck joint, while the bridge uses a modern straight-line design with drop-in saddles.
Neck and Playability
One of the biggest surprises for me was the playability of the 00-DB. The guitar arrived with some of the best action I’ve experienced on an acoustic straight out of the box, and the neck felt extremely comfortable after spending time with it.
Martin uses a Modified V neck profile on this model. The V shape gives your thumb a natural place to rest and provides excellent support when playing more complex chords, while still working well for single-note playing and fingerstyle.
The 25.4-inch scale length also gives the guitar a familiar full-scale feel and works particularly well if you prefer a little more room across the fretboard.
Hardware and Appointments
The 00-DB Jeff Tweedy includes nickel open-gear tuners with vintage-style butterbean knobs, a bone nut, an FSC-certified ebony bridge and fingerboard, and Martin’s classic script logo on the headstock.
The guitar also comes with a molded hard-shell case. Each Jeff Tweedy model includes a signed label inside the guitar, adding another nice touch for collectors and fans of Tweedy’s work.
Martin 000 Junior E Jeff Tweedy
The 000 Junior E Jeff Tweedy takes the same basic philosophy and puts it into a smaller, more accessible package. It’s designed to be comfortable, portable, and easy to take anywhere while still maintaining a full-size playing experience.
Unlike the deeper-bodied 00-DB, the Junior uses a smaller body depth and a 24.9-inch scale length. The result is a compact acoustic that feels very comfortable without feeling like a toy or overly scaled-down instrument.
Build and Tonewoods
The Junior E uses solid FSC-certified sapele for the top, back, and sides. Sapele is closely related to mahogany and gives the guitar a warm, articulate tonal character that fits particularly well with the songwriting-oriented design of the instrument.
The guitar also gets a custom Tweety Burst finish, although the Junior uses a matte finish rather than the high-gloss finish found on the 00-DB. The darker burst looks particularly good against the sapele.
Neck and Playability
Instead of the Modified V profile found on the 00-DB, the Junior E uses Martin’s Performing Artist neck profile. It’s a comfortable shape that makes the guitar easy to play throughout the neck.
The 24.9-inch scale length also contributes to the compact feel, making the Junior especially appealing as a travel guitar, songwriting instrument, or smaller-stage acoustic.
Built-In Electronics
One major advantage of the 000 Junior E is its onboard electronics. Martin equips the guitar with the E1 preamp system, including a built-in tuner, making it much easier to plug directly into an amplifier or PA for live performances.
That gives the Junior E an advantage over the 00-DB if you need a guitar that is ready to plug in without having to install your own pickup system.

The Junior E shares several appointments with its more expensive sibling, including an FSC-certified ebony bridge and fingerboard and Grover-style open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs.
Instead of a molded hard-shell case, the Junior comes with a semi-rigid, travel-friendly gig bag. That makes sense for a guitar designed around portability, while also helping keep the overall price down.
Martin 00-DB vs 000 Junior E: What’s the Difference?
Although these guitars share the Jeff Tweedy name and some of the same design philosophy, there are some important differences between them.

How Do the Martin Jeff Tweedy Guitars Sound?
The 00-DB has a warm but articulate voice that benefits from its deeper body design. There’s a noticeable woody character and sweetness in the midrange, but the guitar doesn’t lose clarity when you dig in.
That makes it surprisingly versatile for a small-bodied acoustic. It works beautifully for intimate fingerstyle playing, but it can also handle full strumming without sounding thin or compressed.
The 000 Junior E has the slightly more compact character you’d expect from its smaller body, but the sapele construction still provides a warm and articulate response. Its smaller dimensions also make it particularly easy to handle for casual playing, songwriting, travel, and smaller gigs.
For the Junior E, the onboard electronics add another dimension. The direct signal can be sent straight into an interface or PA without requiring an additional pickup installation, making it the more practical option for players who frequently perform amplified.
Which Martin Jeff Tweedy Should You Buy?
Choose the Martin 00-DB Jeff Tweedy If…
The 00-DB is the obvious choice if you’re looking for the more premium instrument and want the distinctive feel and tone of the original Jeff Tweedy concept. The mahogany construction, deeper body, Modified V neck, gloss finish, and hard-shell case make it a serious instrument for professional players and collectors.
It’s also worth considering if you prefer to choose your own acoustic pickup system. The lack of onboard electronics may actually be an advantage for players who already have a preferred soundhole pickup or amplification setup.
Choose the 000 Junior E Jeff Tweedy If…
The Junior E makes more sense if portability and price are higher priorities. At around $1,149, it costs considerably less than the 00-DB while still offering a full-size fretboard, quality tonewoods, ebony appointments, a custom Tweety Burst, and onboard electronics.
It’s an especially compelling option for songwriters, traveling musicians, smaller gigs, and anyone who wants a guitar they can take anywhere without worrying quite as much about putting a few scratches or dings in a $3,599 instrument.
Martin Jeff Tweedy 00-DB vs 000 Junior E: Final Verdict
These two guitars aren’t really competing for exactly the same player. The Martin 00-DB Jeff Tweedy is the premium choice, offering a deeper body, solid mahogany construction, a distinctive Modified V neck, and a more refined overall package. It’s the guitar I’d choose if budget wasn’t a concern and I wanted the most complete expression of the Jeff Tweedy signature design.
The 000 Junior E Jeff Tweedy, however, may actually be the more practical guitar for many players. It’s considerably less expensive, easier to travel with, includes onboard electronics, and still delivers a lot of the character and visual appeal of the more expensive model.
If you’re a serious acoustic player, professional musician, or Jeff Tweedy fan looking for a premium Martin, the 00-DB is the standout. If you want a comfortable, gig-worthy and travel-friendly Martin with plenty of personality without spending several thousand dollars, the 000 Junior E is an excellent alternative.
